Futures Program
The Futures Program is an initiative to help local youth acquire proper employability skills and gain workplace experience. It focuses on youth who otherwise might not have exposure to such opportunities and may not plan on pursuing a postsecondary education.
The Program is intended for juniors and seniors at Carbondale Community High School who reside in the City of Carbondale. Application and training procedures take place during the participants’ sophomore and junior years. Students undergo brief training on proper job etiquette, interview techniques, resume preparation, skills and interest, and related employability skills. The most important aspect of the training is first hand experience through part-time employment within the community. The Program begins in June and runs through September. If students perform at a satisfactory level, employers are able to retain them.
The City of Carbondale is committed to this program, paying up to $1000 toward each student’s salary. Employers understand that participants may not possess all of the proper work skills at the beginning of their employment and work with them as mentors. Students work part-time for a minimum of 10 hours per week.
